They are with us for many years as we mark the passing of time together. But all too soon they reach a time for them to transition back into the non-physical and we have to say goodbye. For those who have fur kids this is the day we all dread.
Today was that day.
She came to us in 2009 in really rough shape, flea ridden, pregnant and with half her tail hanging by a thread. She melted us and was quickly whisked off to the Vet for treatment. She returned and began gaining health back and was welcomed into the family of two other fur kids. She was with us ever since with additional fur kids leaving and others arriving. She fit right in with her tortie attitude and the other kids got along with her since they knew she would only put up with things for a time before that right hook swipe would occur.
A little tortie named Ariel, we referred to her as ‘Little’, whose health had been going down for a number of weeks took her last ride today. The last few days saw her sink so low she couldn’t eat, only drink small sips of water when she could muster enough energy to make it to the water bowl close by. We and the Vet tried what seemed to be appropriate but she was at the end of her life here. We watched helpless not knowing what else we could do – until last night. It was decided to move her from her hiding spot under the guestroom bed into the bathtub on a blanket of towels where she would remain warmer overnight. And the call to the Vet was placed. We were set to be there at 9:15am.
With tears welling in our eyes we gently placed her into the pet carrier. We allowed the other cats to visit. It felt as if they understood. We carried the transport to the backseat and she took the last ride. When we arrived the Doctor accommodated us as we bid farewell to our Little. Doctor administered anesthesia to calm her as we remained with her while it took effect. A few minutes later the Doctor returned for the final injection and we were able to be with her as she joined her friends across the Rainbow Bridge.
We brought her home where her oldest buddy Solomon was able to understand she was gone. The other two circled the pet carrier knowing she wasn’t coming back…
As I sit here writing this with tears dripping I know she is back where she began, in a place we Humans can’t quite understand. But we know we did all we could for our little fur kid and we will be at peace knowing she knows that too.

"And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this Earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.
